The Lincoln Memorial Penny has featured the profile of President Abraham Lincoln since 1909, the centennial of his birth. Beginning in 2010, the Union Shield was introduced on the reverse side as a symbol of President Lincoln’s desire to preserve the United States as a single and united country. The Union Shield dates back to the 1780’s and was used widely during the Civil War. Similar to coin shown.
