A Penny from Heaven

This well-known term seems to have originated in the 1930’s with a popular movie and song by Bing Crosby, “Pennies from Heaven.” Kids may also know the phrase from an award winning 2007 children’s book entitled, “Penny from Heaven” by Jennifer L. Holm. It is often associated with good luck, optimism, encouragement and new beginnings.

Many of us think of a "penny from heaven" as a sign from a lost loved one that provides comfort and direction just when we need it most. Here is a popular poem that beautifully conveys this meaning:

“When an angel misses you, they toss a penny down . . .

Sometimes to cheer you up,

To make a smile out of your frown.

So, don’t pass by that penny when you’re feeling blue;

It may be a Penny from Heaven that an angel tossed to you.”
