The Kennedy Half Dollar was first minted in 1964 as a memorial to the assassinated President John F. Kennedy. It was authorized by Congress just a month after his death. Since 2002, Kennedy Half Dollars have only been struck to satisfy the demand from collectors, and are available at a premium through the Mint.
Americans have long considered the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 as the birthday of the United States. And 1976 was a special year: the 200th anniversary, or bicentennial, of our nation’s founding. So for 1976, the U.S. Mint released special versions of three circulating coins: the Washington quarter, the Kennedy half dollar and the Eisenhower dollar. Instead of just the year noted, a dual date of “1776-1976” was featured.
The reverse features a symmetrical front view of Independence Hall in Philadelphia. Both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were signed here.
This 1976 coin is in uncirculated condition (copper-nickel clad) - similar to coin shown.
